Making the Transition from Manager to Leader

This is a typical example of the kind of personal effectiveness training that we do. Here we had a senior manager who had just gained promotion and wanted to evaluate all aspects of his new working life. What should he be doing on a daily basis? How should he be communicating?

By quickly putting him in a practical simulation we could see how he dealt with pressure, conflict, negotiation and power play. This formed the basis to help support him find new ways of doing things and included:

  • Understanding the differences between leading and managing
  • Resisting the temptation to hold onto “old” skills and avoid the “tough stuff” inherent in leadership
  • Recognising which tasks needed to be delegated and who should be given them
  • Developing motivational and persuasive techniques
  • Learning how to deal with conflict constructively
